In Philippians 2:1-2 Paul reminds us of the basis for his exhortation of the Philippian church. He beings with ‘so if there is any’ which introduces the basis for Paul’s exhortation to unity, humility and love among believers. The idea is that if the Philippian Christians have received the things he mentions, then they have a responsibility to do what he is about to describe. “So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. “

Paul asks rhetorical questions – ‘ is there any’ – knowing of course that the answer was yes to all. He lists four things:

  1. encouragement in Christ
  2. comfort from love
  3. participation in the Spirit
  4. affection and sympathy
