John 12:26-34

Arlin Sorensen's Thoughts on Scripture

In John 12:26-34 Jesus begins to make clear what it really means to be a Christ Follower.  “If any of you wants to serve me, then follow me. Then you’ll be where I am, ready to serve at a moment’s notice. The Father will honor and reward anyone who serves me”. To be a Christian is to serve Jesus, to follow Him. It doesn’t mean that you stop working your job or caring for your family or studying at school. It means you do all that as a servant of Jesus, a follower of Jesus.  It means that everything we do is done through the lens of serving Christ.  That plays out through serving those in our patch following the example that Jesus set for us through His life of serving mankind.

I’ve had a self-hosted blog for just under a year now. At the time I wrote a post about some of the reasons why I moved to a self hosted blog. But today I thought I would share my experience of actually moving over. I had originally assumed the whole process was going to be quite confusing, especially since most people I know have paid for a Guided Transfer which will do everything for you. But apart from a few hiccups, it ended up being a pretty simple process.

cluttered desk with laptop and notebook

I didn’t just decide to move to a self-hosted blog on a whim. It was something I had been thinking about for a while. I had done a good deal of research, looking into where was the best deals for hosting and any other extras I may need to buy.

After speaking to a few friends and having a look around the site I settled on BlueHost for my blog. This is actually one of the hosts WordPress recommended and the WordPress software was automatically installed on my server space when I bought the hosting.

Then I had to transfer my blog across from You can pay £100 for someone at WordPress to do this for you but I thought I would be able to handle most problems. There is also a handy guide on on how to transfer which helped me through the whole process.

After getting the WordPress software all set up in my new hosting space I had to transfer over my posts and pages. This involves exporting everything from my old blog, then installing a plugin on my new blog, when I uploaded the exported file it would transfer everything across. The actual exported file doesn’t contain everything on your blog, just the information needed for the plugin to go to your old one and move everything across.

However, this didn’t work. At the time I had been blogging for four and a half years, had almost 500 posts and quite a lot of data to move over. It seemed like I had come upon some limit that BlueHost had for the amount of data in a specific folder. All my posts moved over fine but none of the images made it. This meant I spent a day going back through every single post on my blog and manually uploading the images.

After that I got my theme reinstalled. I kept the theme I had been using on but I did need to buy it again which cost me around £50. Making sure my domain was pointing to the right place was reasonably easy. The hardest part is waiting for the domain to start working. Having the ability to install plugins made the rest of the setup pretty quick. I have plugins for Google Adsense and Analytics. Security software and automatic backups.

I also have the Jetpack plugin installed. This means I can connect my self-hosted blog to This has a number of benefits like additional login security and it monitors for anyone trying to hack into my blog. It also meant I could transfer my subscribers over to the new blog so my posts would still appear in their reader.

I can still access my analytics and notifications through The Jetpack support team can move your statistics over to the new blog. This isn’t something which is totally necessary. But it is nice to not feel like you’re starting out from scratch again.

I can understand why someone would take advantage of the Guided Transfer service. Moving a blog can seem daunting at first. Fortunately, I have a background in Computing which really helped here. But there is a fantastic guide on which takes you through the whole process step by step. If you’re thinking about moving and want to save £100 I really would recommend trying it out yourself. The whole process took me about a day to complete. And though I did have a few problems with moving to a self-hosted blog it still could have been worse.

How to: create a Slack alert bot for Parliament events

Online Journalism Blog

Following a request on the Bureau Local Slack channel (join here) I created a tutorial on how to create a Slack bot which would post alerts whenever a new House of Commons or House of Lords event was added to the Parliamentary calendar (this can be adapted for any events calendar that provides an RSS feed). I thought I’d share it here too…

Slack is a great platform for organising a team — and it’s very easy to integrate with bots that will post alerts to a channel whenever something happens. Here’s how to do that using the free tool IFTTT.

Uzor appealed to the state Commissioner of Police, for discreet investigation over the matter with the hope of bringing the killer to justice.

Face of evil in Imo State, Nigeria: Kidnap suspect explains say they Kidnap & Rape Old Victims

A suspected kidnapper, Nnamdi Ethelbert, Ogidi, has been arrested by detectives attached to the Anti-kidnapping Squad, Imo State Police Command.

Ogidi has a record of kidnapping elderly women.

The 34-year-old confessed to the police that he and his gang members who are currently at large have abducted several persons out of which 15 of them were elderly women.

Ogidi was arrested after he kidnapped a 74-year-old Regina Nkwocha, from Umuanyika, Ngorokpala Local Government Area of Imo state.

They had entered negotiation for N20million ransom when detectives busted their hideout at Umuaguma in Owerri West, Imo state on May 23, 2018. Ogidi was arrested while the other members of his gang escaped.

The Imo state Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galadanchi told Sun that the suspect, Ogidi was popularly known as Bori and his gang members have been on the wanted list of the police over several cases of kidnapping.

The Police Commissioner explained that on November 29, 2017, Ogidi and his gang kidnapped Adulphus Akagha aged 94; on May 7, 2018, they kidnapped 65 -year-old Dorothy Nkwo and demanded N5million ransom.

She was later released after the family paid N500, 000.

He stated that Ogidi had successfully kidnapped Mrs. Nkwocha and was negotiating for an N20million ransom when detectives led by Supol Sani Ahmed stormed their hideout and rescued the victim.

At the police station, Ogidi confessed that he joined the gang of kidnappers five years ago. “I am from Imo State and after dropping out of senior secondary school, I learned how to become a mechanic.

“Along the line, I met bad friends who initiated me into the deadly cult group known as Debam fraternity. Most of them were into one bad thing or the other, so it was easy for me to join a gang of kidnappers who are also members of the cult.

“We derive pleasure in kidnapping elderly women and while their family members will be running around for ransom, we will take turns to rape the women.

“Our hideout is at Egbema local government. We prefer elderly women because it is easier to control them and their family members are always in a hurry to pay for their release” he said.

Ogidi begged all the elderly women that they had kidnapped to forgive him. “I know that we have made a lot of money from kidnapping but because of the trauma that those women who are old enough to be my mother went through, I am sincerely sorry. I still hope that the police will arrest the others because I cannot face the consequence of our action alone.”
